Instructions for Submission of Application

  1. Fill the details of the applicant or the request.
  2. Upload the documents.
  3. Upload the photo and signature (if required). It is applicable for certain states only.
  4. Book a slot for DL Test. It is required only for AEDL (Additional Endorsement of Driving Licence).
  5. Pay the fee.

About Driving Licence TestThere are mainly two types of driving licences which are:

  1. Learner’s Licence – It is a temporary licence valid for only 6 months.
  2. Permanent Licence – Will be given once you pass your driving test.

To obtain the permanent license you will have to pass the test which should be simple if you are well-versed with your driving skills. You can book an appointment online in before you appear for the test or you can visit the RTO directly with the relevant documents. You will be able to see the available slots if you log on to the official website to book your slot. You must choose among the available slots. Once the slot is booked, you need to go to the RTO for the test at the designated time.Your driving skills will be tested in the Permanent Driving Licence Test. Your test will be conducted by an Inspector from the RTO. It involves the candidate having to drive through the RTO’s designated driving track. You will be tested on general driving skills, how well you follow the rules, and your knowledge of the rules. You can read the text of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1989 (Driving Test) for information.

Procedure For Driving Licence Test

  1. You can get the application form CMV 4 either from the enquiry counter or you can choose to download it by going online. You will need to submit 3 passport size photographs if you decide to get it from the counter.
  2. You will need to produce the following documents to be eligible for a Driving Licence:
    1. Valid learner’s licence.
    2. All the required documents of the vehicle in which you propose to appear for the driving test. This includes Registration Certificate, Insurance Certificate, Tax Card, ‘Pollution under Control Certificate’ and if it is a transport vehicle, the Fitness Certificate and any other related documents.
    3. In case you are appearing for the test with a transport vehicle, you will also need the certificate in form CMV 5 which will be issued by your Driving Training School.

    5. Completely filled Application form
    6. Recent passport size photographs
  3. For the Driving Licence test, you need to go to the RTO office and pay a fee of Rs. 40 for a DL book. You will also need to pay Rs. 50 for the Driving Test. You must submit the application along with the documents to the RTO.*Revised fee for DL Test in January – 2017 – Rs. 300
  4. Next, the driving test will be conducted. Once you pass the test and have paid the fee, your details will be taken and the DL will be given to you within a period of time.

LMV Test Sequence

These are the skills that you will be assessed on as a motorcar driver:

  1. Ability to Parallel Park (alongside a kerb).
  2. Ability to drive forward on an ‘8’ shaped road.
  3. Ability to drive forward on a road that has an upward Gradient. The candidate should be able to do so without any backward movement.
  4. Ability to drive backward on an ‘S’ shaped road.

Two Wheelers Licence Track Test

The following are the steps you must follow when you go to the RTO for a two-wheeler licence test:

  1. Candidate must come to the RTO at the time slot allotted to them with the valid Learners License
  2. They must also have with them the Driving Licence Test Fee Paid receipt
  3. Candidate must report at the Registration Desk before the allotted time
  4. The SARATI software database will verify the Candidate’s ID, LL and other documents.
  5. As part of the identity verification, there will be a thumbs verification carried out.
  6. If the candidate is found to be eligible, he/she will be given Authorizations document to enter the Testing Area
  7. The Authorizations document will include details such as Name, LL number, Class of Vehicle for which the test is being attempted, Date of Birth, LL issue date etc. The candidate is also required to carry an unique ID number and an RFID card for use in the test track
  8. Candidate should enter the Testing area along with the vehicle and await his/her turn
  9. For the two wheeler riding test, you must ride a Two Wheeler, in the forward direction, on a track shaped like an ‘8’. The candidate is expected not to place his/her foot down until the track is complete. The test must be completed within the stipulated time.
  10. For verification, the candidate must swipe his/her RFID card in the Reader which is placed at the entry of the track.
  11. There will be Signal Lights in the track to guide the candidate
  12. The signal light will flash red when the candidate ID is being verified by the computer system.
  13. The signal will turn to green if the computer verifies that the candidate is eligible to take the test.
  14. At this point, the candidate can start their two wheeler and move forward and cross the START line.
  15. Once the START line is crossed, the Signal light would turn back to red.
  16. While riding on the track, the candidate must make sure that none of the marker poles, which will be on the borders of the parking slot, are knocked down.
  17. The computer will start a timer as soon as the candidate’s vehicle crosses the START line. The timer will run until the vehicle crosses the STOP line or until the allotted time finishes.
  18. The computer will detect any violations like if the sensors are disturbed from their position and marks will be cut automatically. The marks at the end is decided by the number of violations and the amount of time the candidate took to complete the test.
  19. There will be a video taken of the candidate completing the test. The clip will be stored as part of the candidate’s record.
  20. As an additional record, the candidate’s picture will be taken midway of the test. The camera will be mounted inside the LMV.

What will happen if I happen to fail the test?

If you happen to have failed the DL test, you must collect your application and documents and leave. You can appear for the test again after 7 days. You will need to pay the test fees when you appear for the re-test.

Advice Before taking DL Test

You will need to fulfil the following requirements when you appear for the Driver’s Licence Test:

  1. Bring your valid learner’s licence, application forms and other relevant documents
  2. Test Slot Booking slip along with New Test Slot if Booked from internet or from any RTA Office
  3. Many people go for the test through an agent. They fear that going independently will reduce their chance of passing the test. This is not true.
  4. The lack of confidence and lack of skills are the main reasons that many people fail at the test. Also, candidates must have a good knowledge of signals, signs and rules.
  5. Avoid stalling the vehicle during the test. Stalling the vehicle will signal that you are not completely adept with your driving skills.

Do or Don’ts while taking DL Test

Do’s

  1. You must appear at least one hour before the time slot that you have been given.
  2. You must appear with the respective class of vehicle that you are appearing for the test.
  3. The test must be conducted in the presence of Motor Vehicle Inspector.
  4. Wear a seatbelt while driving a four wheeler. Wear a helmet while riding a two wheeler.

The driving test conducted by the RTO allows an individual to avail a driving licence. The DL is given to the individual upon successfully passing the test.
