PM Vishwakarma Scheme: ‘Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana’ was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 17 September 2023. Its objective is to provide financial assistance to artisans and craftsmen who work with traditional equipment, their hands or tools.
Under this scheme, the condition of the craftsmen of the country is to be improved comprehensively. ‘Vishwakarma’ scheme was started with the aim of valuing their contribution in the progress of the country and improving their condition. Let us know about this scheme in detail.

What is PM Vishwakarma Yojana:
PM Vishwakarma is a central sector scheme launched by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. This scheme encourages artisans and craftsmen with cheap loans, skill training, modern equipment, digital transactions.
A budget of Rs 13,000 crore has been kept for this scheme. 18 occupations have been included under this scheme. PM Vishwakarma will initially be implemented over a period of five years till the financial year 2027-28.
What is the benefit of the scheme:
Under this scheme, following types of help will be provided to artisans and craftsmen-
Skill Training: Basic training of 5-7 days and specialized training of 15 days or more will be provided with a stipend of Rs 500 per day.
Loan assistance: Under this scheme, provision has been made for cheap loans to artisans. Under this, a loan of up to three lakh rupees will be provided in two installments of one lakh and two lakh rupees for a period of 18 months and 30 months respectively. This will be provided at a concessional interest rate of 5% with a discount up to 8% by the Government of India.
Toolkit Incentive: A toolkit incentive of up to Rs 15,000 in the form of e-voucher will also be given at the beginning of basic skill training.
Digital Incentive: For every digital payment or receipt, an amount of Rs 1 per digital transaction will be credited to the beneficiary’s account, up to a maximum of 100 transactions per month.
Certificate: Craftsmen or artisans will be provided a unique identity with PM Vishwakarma Certificate and ID Card.
Eligibility for the scheme:
- Artisans or craftsmen engaged in any of the above mentioned traditional occupations can avail the benefits of this scheme-
- The minimum age for the scheme has been fixed at 18 years.
- Except Mudra and Swanidhi beneficiaries who have fully repaid their loans, those who have not taken loan under similar credit-based schemes in the last 5 years can also avail the benefit of this scheme.
- Registration and Benefits Only one member per family can avail the benefit of this scheme.
- Government employees and their family members are not eligible for this scheme.

How to apply:
Application for this scheme will be done on PM Vishwakarma Portal through Common Service Centers with Aadhaar-based biometric authentication.
After enrolment, there will be a three-step verification which is as follows-
- Verification at Gram Panchayat/ULB level
- Scrutiny and recommendation by District Implementation Committee
- Approval by Screening Committee
